Death wasn't a foreign feeling to a canary

The sounds of heartbroken screams and satisfied laughs and cheers were something it had grown accustomed to.

Part of it learned to find amusement in watching the others destroy themselves like a starving pack of wolves.

After all, it was when it was gone that the rest started dropping like flies.

That was the fate of the canary in a coal mine, an omen of death.

its demise was always a lonely one, it was the welcomer that had no one to welcome them to the pearly gates.

It just so happened that the canary and its soulmate would meet due to such death. 

But the canaries soulmate was a phoenix, a symbol of hope, of getting back up after tragedy.

When scarred men burned down their home, the phoenix stood their ground and fought. 

When the canary fell, the phoenix gave nothing but comfort.

The canary felt bliss for the first time in a while, someone who understood.

Until its, no, their demise.

This time, their demise wasnt a lonely one.

This time, they took the one who shared the curse, the phoenix.

The canary sat in disbelief and despair, a pathetic gloom that no one could see painted on his face. A Silent apology.

“Yup still dead” a sour response replied.

The 2 birds sat in silence. Watching the chaos ensure.

Then the phoenix spoke again.

“Your still here?”

“Its a destiny i'm bound to, and this time, so are you”

“Its over”

“Im aware”

“go home”

“Home? This is my home”

“What?”

“This is the only home I can return to”

“Once this is over, you wont be able to return”

“I know, ill cherish it while i can”

It was at this moment that the canary realized the phoenixes demands for him to leave as heartbroken rather then anger. 

A sorrow that the canary only knew from peering in from beyond the grave.

The canary stared at the phoenix as the phoenix tearfully ate a bite of his pancakes.

“Will we ever meet again?”

“Soulmates are forever” the phoenix replied, “we played the game and the universe might reward us”

“We will meet again, i vow it”

“Wait for me?”

“I shall wait til the end of time, with the thought of your warm embrace as my will”

“Well then….”

“See you then, Jimmy”
