My review of Episode 1 of Fraggle Rock Back To The Rock S2. (Spoilers)

A fun first episode! That opening song was amazing. There were a ton of really funny jokes and we set up some interesting plot points! I think that talking about toxic positivity and how to help a friend after they've dealt with something scary or dramatic was a great topic. The new song was okay. I loved seeing Mudwell in a little cameo. I think the pacing was a little rushed, and I feel like it's a little too similar to S1 E1, but I'll let it slide because I had a good time. Traveling Matt made a cackle this episode, especially when he mailed Pogey back to the rock in a box. I'm excited to see more!

I don't like the redesign either, but after I heard the producers explain why I kind of understand it? Mokey was always meant to be older than her friends, and you can see that through her design. She's much bigger, she has live hands, softer eyes, a grandma style cardigan, and more muted colors. When they pitched a reboot, Apple TV thought that Mokey looked a little too old (i disagree, but whatever). They wanted her to feel less like the other characters' mom and more childlike. That's why they turned up the saturation, changed her hair, gave her rod arms, and a new costume (I actually do really like her necklace with all the little trinkets on it I think that's cute)

Once again, I much prefer the original Mokey. She's soft and sweet, and I just want to give her a hug. I understand why they had to give her a redesign, I just wish it wasn't so dramatic of a change. She doesn't really look like Mokey anymore and that's sad.

I still love the new show. I think it's really amazing and it keeps the spirit of the original show. I'm excited for season 2.

Okay I’m going to bitch about the Fraggle Rock reboot and how much I hate the way the redesigned Mokey

That being said

and can’t stand the reboot’s redesign of Mokey. Now, I haven’t seen the reboot, and I don’t plan too. But there’s just one thing that makes me fucking furious, and that’s Mokey’s redesign.

I hate it.

“But Zeke, “hate” is a strong word, you can’t find it that bad can you?”

I can and I will. as far as I’m concerned, that isn’t Mokey. Mokey would NEVER look like that. NEVER.

this redesign doesn’t even look like her! If I didn’t know better I’d think it was a completely different character! They took everything I loved about Mokey and ruined it

The colors are the most egregious to me. They took Mokey’s soft pastel colors and cranked up the saturation. And they don’t even look good together, they aren’t even appealing.

and like. She doesn’t even fit in with her friends anymore, she sticks out like a sore thumb. OG Mokey fit right in, but Reboot Mokey just doesn’t. She feels like she’s from a different show.

AND NO ONE ELSE GOT REDESIGNED, SO WHY DID MOKEY??? HER DESIGN WAS JUST FINE

secondly they gave her a dress and that makes me want to maim someone. I LIKED HER WIZARD CARDIGAN. SHE LOOKED NONBINARY AND AS A NONBINARY PERSON I LIKED THAT A LOT. It’s like they gave her a dress to say “look she’s a girl. Because girls wear dresses. And so she has to wear one”. I know Nonbinary people can wear dresses but it just feels weird to me as a nonbinary person who relates a lot to Mokey and gets dysphoria from dresses.

also they took away the stoned wizard vibe of the og and made her look like a TikTok white girl and I HATE IT. Mokey is a stoner wizard, not a TikTok girl.

and if you look at the redesign you would never in a million years guess what her personality was supposed to be. She looks like a peppy cottagecore type, not her actual dreamy artist with an egotistical streak. And that’s bad character design imo. You can tell everyone’s personality by looking at them EXCEPT FOR HER. OG Mokey looked like she would be dreamy and artistic, and she IS.

All in all they took away every design element that made Mokey,, Mokey and it makes me so fucking mad so I have done what I must and said “the reboot isn’t Fraggle Rock. It isn’t part of the series I love. It’s its own thing, NOT Fraggle Rock” because im not letting it get in the way of enjoying Fraggle Rock.

(Deep breath) it’s not very good. I don’t like it

Here’s a quick and way too colorful drawing of my OC’s to say happy pride month! Given time, the rest of the gang may make an appearance, but for now, Daniel (left) and Nathan (right) will have their moment to shine.

Previously, I have not been part of any pride month celebrations, but I’m happy to be able to share some of my characters with you. These two and their friends have done a lot over the past few years to help me understand and process different aspects of my life and hopefully, eventually, they can do that for others too.

Daniel (left) is pansexual and Nathan (right) identifies as queer.

Can't believe I almost didn't attack @oddcabinboy this year, that's unforgivable! Ngl, I've never seen or understand how Fraggles work? But I just had to try and draw Pip Fraggle, it was... A need, you know? I really hope I got him right! It was a nice... rest? to draw him 💕 I still have a couple characters on my bookmarks so let's hope I can get to draw them all before Art Fight ends, cross your fingers!

I just watched the new Jim Henson documentary…

Overall it was very good, well paced, great visuals and editing. I learned a lot about Jim Henson and the company that I didn’t before and more behind the scenes that I hadn’t seen/heard which is always a treat!

I cried three times. 🫣👌 I had to fight the primal urge to pause the documentary and point out to my family where and what movie/show/episode every clip was from. This was my “did you know Viggo Mortensen actually broke his toe” scene.

I will say, I do think they very QUICKLY went over the disney merger and didn’t even mention the fallout with Disney after Jim’s death.

The main problem I had was that SOME puppeteers got spot lights, interviews or arrows pointing out the individuals. And while I appreciate that these individuals got some recognition (which they 100% should), I think the documentary should have been consistent and do this with every new important/fundamental puppeteer to the film.

I alreay have!!! I was able to EASILY point out Karen Prell, Louise Gold, Richard Hunt, Jerry Nelson, Kevin Clash, Steve whitmire, etc. But an average viewer wouldn’t know who is who and what they contributed to the company!

I just think it’s intriguing who they chose to highlight and who they left out.

And I’ve noticed this happen in other muppet documentaries, like “Street Gang,” where they barely glossed over Richard Hunt and Jerry Nelson’s contributions to the show. (I’ve mentioned this problem here before. (Queer erasure during pride month? 🙄))

It would be such an easy problem to fix! Just a quick arrow to point out any new puppeteer or cast member to the Jim Henson Company. Maybe list their job/their characters so a main stream audience could identify them.

I can think of several founding members who are still alive today that were not interviewed. Maybe these people were asked to come in, IDK, but I would have loved to hear from more people you don’t hear from often.

I could definitely tell the documentary was really trying to avoid the “Steve Whitmire” sized elephant in the room, even though he was in SO MANY shots. I can guarantee that if he was still with the company he would have been featured heavily in the documentary.

They interviewed Michael Frith, where was my girl Kathryn Mullen?? (His wife.) She hasn’t done anything in over a decade, are you okay?? Blink if you need help. 👁️👄👁️😐😑😐😑
